Our Story

Where specialty coffee meets sustainable lifestyle.

We love coffee, but climate change is a serious issue. If we don’t change our ways we will lose a lot - including coffee. We need to actively make an effort to protect the planet, coffee plantations and therefore the livelihoods of the farmers. That’s why we built sango - to encourage everyone to be more conscious of the way they live. We believe there are many good habits we can build especially as coffee drinkers.

We converted a historical building from 1670 with a traditional Amsterdam-style clock gable into a cozy store.

Our basement is a showroom for ECM espresso machines and JURA fully automatic coffee machines. As an official dealer, we are here to help you choose the best coffee machine for you to use at home. On the main & second-floor, you can enjoy a great cup of specialty coffee, carefully selected and roasted at our micro-roastery. You can also attend one of our coffee workshops here to learn more about coffee. While we strive for great hospitality, we also hope to inspire everyone to be more ecoconscious through practicing sustainability at our store.

We chose the name sango, which means corals in Japanese. We are inspired by how sustainable practices have always been embodied in the traditional Japanese culture - one which we are proud to belong. As individuals, as business owners, and as parents, we are challenged to make ecoconscious decisions every day.

We hope to inspire many of you through sango, and hope that you will join us on our green journey.

The Mori Initiative

"Mori" means forests in Japanese, a suitable name for this initiative as we focus on the importance of forest restoration and preservation.

MORI represents our commitment to tackle climate change beyond what we do at our store. As a part of this initiative, we will be making a monthly contribution to Trees for All, a Dutch not-for-profit foundation we have chosen based on their vast local and international projects, and the transparency in their work.

Planting trees is not a fix-all solution to climate change. As individuals and as a business we still need to do our part, such as reducing carbon emission by adopting low carbon practices in our daily lives. However, we believe in the power of trees and forests. They are critical in preserving biodiversity and the local ecosystem. A healthy forest benefits people and the local community as well, such as those involved in coffee production. This is why we have decided to donate 1 tree for every 6 bags of coffee sold.

We would like to thank all our customers - it is only with your continued support that we are able to run this project. Thank you!

Number of trees planted since August 2021: 134 (updated 31 December 2022)

Trees for All is certified by The Netherlands Fundraising Regulator (CBF), which ensures our donations are used on their traceable projects. Find our more about the foundation and their projects here.
